What Else Can You Learn?

What else can you learn from the Manager of the Year?  We looked at the example of Ryne Sandberg last September.  This member of the Baseball Hall of Fame taught us 3 lessons with his character and good example of leadership:

1) Don’t let your pride get in the way of your dreams. Ryne Sandberg made a very credible case that he was ready to manage the National League Cubs and that he was the best candidate.  Yet when he was told to go to the lowest level in the minor league system, he went.  He went because it would lead to bigger things.

2)  Work hard to achieve your dreams. Managing in the A league is not easy and there are few if any perks.  Ryne Sandberg went to work to achieve his dream of being the Manager of the Chicago Cubs.

3)  Do your job well, even if you think you are being under utilized. Not only did Ryno go to work, he has been doing his job as a minor league manager exceptionally well.  He is winning at every level.  He is the Manager of the Year.

Since then, Sandberg applied to be Manager of the Chicago Cubs one more time as the position opened again late last summer.  Many were surprised when he was not selected and moved on to the Philadelphia Phillies organization.  Facing rejection and disappointment Ryne Sandbert accepts the role of Manager for another minor league team.  Few Hall of Famers would have accepted the minor league role he assumed several years ago yet he accepts another.  Not only does he accept the role, he excels again.  Sandberg took over a team that was one of the worst in the minor leagues.  Their record improves by 22 games and Ryne leads them to first round play-off victory.

From this we can learn at least one more lesson:

Act with dignity and do your job well, even when faced with disappointment and adversity.

    Great example of leadership from Sandberg. I have been confronted with similar situations lately and I have not acted like Ryne did. I did let my ego get in the way and couldn’t accept taking 5 steps backwards (or going back to the beginning). This puts that into a different perspective for me to think about.

      Thanks for checking in. I’m sorry to hear of your situation and hope it works out well in the end. Ryne Sandberg has been a class act for as long as he’s been in the public eye. I hope that he gets a major league managerial role before too long. Another famous Chicago sports figure left town just this week. He really did a lot of damage to his public image in the process.
