Still Not Convinced? Four More Reasons to Get Lean

The results are in from Food & Beverage Packaging magazine’s State of the Industry Survey.   According to editor Pan Demetrakakes, this survey ranks the top 5 issues facing manufacturers as:

1. Production & efficiency improvements – 55%
2. Cost cutting – 53%
3. Sustainable packaging – 47%
4. Food safety – 32%
5. Staffing & training – 11%

This survey allowed for participants to choose more than one category and also allowed for written answers to supplement their responses. Responders emphasized focus on operational issues with comments like:

• Cutting costs
• Doing more with less
• Leaning the process
• Line efficiency improvements

Lean addresses each of these top concerns. You may recall a recent post on this blog outlining 5 benefits of Lean Manufacturing:

1. Eliminating wasted time and resources
2. Building quality into workplace systems
3. Finding low-cost but reliable alternatives to expensive new technology
4. Perfecting business processes
5. Building a learning culture for continuous improvement

Food & Beverage Packaging’s survey underscores four more reasons to get Lean: Eliminating waste and continuous improvement are critical to (1) efficiency improvements and (2) cost cutting. Building quality into workplace systems and perfecting business processes are critical to (3) food safety. Building a learning culture leads to (4) improved training.

I want to caution that Lean is not a tool to dust off on those occasions when you need to improve efficiencies or cut costs. Lean is a [tweetmeme]change in mindset. Lean is a Zero Loss mentality. Lean attacks waste in all forms. Lean is a relentless pursuit of excellence. At the same time, Lean is becoming more main-stream in manufacturing because of the undeniable financial benefits to successfully transforming one’s organization into a Lean Zero Loss culture. According to The Toyota Way Fieldbook, Lean reduces the time between customer order and delivery by eliminating non-value-added waste. Lean processes deliver high quality products to the customer, on time, without holding huge inventories, and allow for the company to get paid. Lean is not about tools and techniques, it’s about philosophy.
